ACADEMIES
I belong to the Real Academia de Ciencias Exactas, Físicas y Naturales (elected 2005). I was inducted in November 2007 (my speach had the title La integración Geométrica and was discussed by Amable Liñán). I hold the medal number 20, where I succeeded Alberto Dou, who in turn had succeeded Julio Rey Pastor. From October 2012 to September 2018 I chaired the Mathematics Section. From October 2018 to September 2021 I was president of the Royal Academy and I have been reelected for a new three-year period. The Academic year 2020-2021 I was deputy president of Instituto de España, the body that coordinates the different National Royal Academies of Spain. In 2021-2022, I was president.
I am Academician at Academia de Medicina y Cirugía de Valladolid (election 2007, induction 2008).
European Academy of Sciences, member since 2012.

SIAM (Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics)
Appointed Fellow of SIAM in May 2009 in the inaugural class. The class had 183 Fellows (selected from the 10000 members of SIAM).

In 2013-2015 I served in the Committee in charge of selecting Fellows.
From 2021 I serve in the Major Awards Committee, responsible for the prizes and other recognitions given by the society.

SOCIEDAD ESPAÑOLA DE MATEMATICA APLICADA (SEMA)
I was part (with Antonio Valle, Ildefonso Díaz, Alfredo Bermúdez, Amable Liñán y Joan de Solà-Morales) of the committee that created the Spanish Society of Applied Mathematics in 1992 and I was vicepresident in 1994-1995.I typed and printed the first issue of the bulletin of the society!
REAL SOCIEDAD MATEMATICA ESPAÑOLA
I belonged to the group that revitalized the Royal Mathematical Society of Spain. In the period immediately following the reconstitution of the society, while A. Martinez Naveira was president, I was elected vicepresident in 1997. I continued as vicepresident, with C. Andradas as president, until 2001.

From January 2021 I serve at CAIR (Committee for Applications and Interdisciplinary relations).
